Elder

William Thomas Elder, 83, formerly of Mulberry Lane in Slippery Rock, died at 12:10 p.m. Saturday at the Slippery Rock Personal Care Home.

Born in Ames, Story County, Iowa, Sept. 3, 1924, he was the son of Walter Treadway Elder and Flossie Jane Cullison Elder.

Bill retired in 1992 from Slippery Rock University, where he worked in the mail room. Prior to that, he owned and operated the Mercer Dairy Queen in Mercer from 1952 to 1975. During that time, he also was a meat cutter at Bill Martin Meats of Slippery Rock.

Mr. Elder was a member of the Center Presbyterian Church, Slippery Rock.

He was an Army veteran and served as a medic in Europe during World War II. He was a member of the Slippery Rock American Legion Post 393.

He has a hamburger named for him at the Camelot Restaurant in Slippery Rock called "The Billy Burger."

His wife, Elizabeth Jane Osborne Elder, whom he married July 16, 1947, died Dec. 14, 1977.

Surviving are a son, Thomas J. Elder of Slippery Rock; three daughters, Carolyn Sue Wilson and her husband, Douglas, of Greensburg, Nancy Jayne Beggs and her husband, Charles, of Butler and Julie Ann Perrine and her companion, David Studebaker, of Mercer; five grandchildren, Shawn and Adam Beggs, Jeremy and Eric Elder and Megan Wilson; a great-granddaughter, Kiley; and two great-grandsons, Hayden and Alexander.

<B>ELDER</B> — Friends of William Thomas Elder, who died Saturday, July 12, 2008, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the <B>Smith Funeral Home</B>, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock. Visitation also will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where services will follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. James Boos, pastor of Center Presbyterian Church of Slippery Rock, officiating.
