Loyal DeWitt Stewart, 77, of Butler died at 1:05 p.m. Thursday in his home.

Born Jan. 9, 1931, in Butler, he was the son of the late Stanley Ross Stewart and Twila A. Umstead Stewart.

He was a field auditor for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He retired Jan. 26, 1996.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was an escort for the Butler County Area on Aging. He was a longtime volunteer for the First United Methodist Church Community meals. He also volunteered at the VA Medical Center in Butler as a wheelchair escort.

He enjoyed world band radio, history and visiting family. He also was a stamp collector.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife, Donna M. Shields Stewart, who he married on March 5, 1954; three sons, Loyal Douglas Stewart and his wife, Amy, of Beltsville, Md., Bruce Alan Stewart and his wife, Nina, of Waynesburg, Pa., and Gordon Bradley Stewart and his wife, Rebecca, of Wilmington, Del.; five grandchildren, Joshua, Ailisa, Benjamin, Liadin and Liam; a number of nieces and nephews; and one brother, Donald R. Stewart of Butler.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Catherine Weibel, and one brother, Ralph Ross Stewart.
