Walkers fighting cancer
Linda Charpentier of Butler and her daughter,
Laurissa, 16, will walk 60 miles along Lake Erie as part of the Breast Cancer 3-Day from Aug. 22 to 24 in Cleveland. The series of three-day, 60-mile walks will take place in 14 cities and will raise money for breast cancer charities. The Charpentiers are going to Cleveland because it is the location closest to Butler. Each walker must raise at least $2,200. Teams also are responsible for arranging their own transportation to Cleveland. The proceeds benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure and National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund and support breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment. The Charpentiers formed their team, Gram's Girls, in honor of Linda's grandmother, Bertha, and a friend's mother."I do have breast cancer in my family, so it hits home,"Linda Charpentier said. "We want to do what we can to stop it, and we hope that it will be a thing of the past."Teams walk an average of 20 miles each day. Meals, snacks, mobile showers, tents, and 24-hour medical support are provided.According to the Susan G. Komen foundation, more than 200,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will lose their lives this year."That's why I'm walking so far,"Linda Charpentier said. "To do something bold about breast cancer."Anyone who wants to join the team can. To join or to donate, visit www.08.the3day.org/goto/GramsGirls.
