Residents form group set on cleaning up The Island
In an effort to clean up The Island neighborhood of Butler, residents Kathy Kline and Henry Sinopoli have formed the group Neighbors that Care.
The group meets one Saturday per month and picks up litter in the neighborhood, which is between Main Street and Sullivan's Run, and Negley Avenue and Jefferson Street.
"This is an ongoing summer project to be good stewards of the neighborhood," said Kline, who is a city council member and lives in the neighborhood.
The group had its first meeting April 10 and its first work day April 19.
"We used this month to start because of Earth Day. It was quite successful," Kline said.
Businesses in the Island have helped by allowing the volunteers to use their waste bins for bags of refuse.
"It worked out wonderfully last Saturday. I would be happy to inspire other neighborhoods to do this," Kline said.
