Claude M. Phipps

Phipps

Claude M. Phipps, 97, of the Grove Manor Nursing Home in Grove City, died at 11 a.m. Saturday after a brief illness. He had lived in Clintonville for more than 60 years before moving to Grove City in 2000.

Born in Irwin Township, Venango County, Nov. 12, 1909, he was the son of Lowry Phipps and Alma Surrena.

Mr. Phipps had worked at the Cooper Energies-Cooper Cameron and retired in 1973 as a machinist.

He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Clintonville, where he was active as a deacon and attended Sunday school in his earlier years.

He attended the public school in Irwin Township and Wesley High School in Venango County and graduated from the Grove City High School.

He enjoyed gardening and yard work and hunting in his earlier years; and most of all, he enjoyed his family and grandchildren.

Surviving are a son, James W. Phipps and his wife, Charlotte L. Phipps, of Grove City; grandchildren, Mrs. Patrick (Sharon) Stone of Butler, the Rev. Richard J. Phipps and his wife, Marsha, of West Mifflin, Randy E. Phipps and his wife, Rita, of Perrysburg, Ohio; and five great-great-grandchildren, Katie and Tyler Stone of Butler, McKenna and Abby Phipps of West Mifflin and Kade Phipps of Perrysburg, Ohio. He also is survived by two brothers, Paul Phipps of Grove City and Andy Phipps of California.

He married Olive L. McElroy on June 6, 1934. She died Sept. 18, 1993. He also was preceded in death by two sisters, Lucille McNeese and Donna Phipps.

<B>PHIPPS </B>— Friends of Claude M. Phipps, who died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the <B>Larry E. McKinley Funeral Home</B>, 109 Emlenton St., Clintonville. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with his grandson, the Rev. Richard Phipps, pastor of the Homestead Park United Methodist Church of West Mifflin, officiating. Burial will follow at the Clintonville Methodist Cemetery.
