MARION TWP — The parents of an infant discovered unattended in a Boyers Road trailer Wednesday have surrendered to police.

George Washington Staley III, 39, and Katie Lee Klein, 27, who have no known address, turned themselves in at 11:30 p.m. Monday at the state police barracks in Butler.

According to a police report, they were placed in the Butler County Prison on bench warrants from other cases and are being held without bond.

Staley and Klein are the parents of a 1-year-old boy found at 641 Boyers Road by state police investigating another matter last week. Police said the 6-by-12-foot trailer was in deplorable condition, with no sewage service, electricity or water service.

The trailer had a space heater with an extension cord reportedly running to a nearby mobile home, but no baby food or clothing was found.

Butler County Children and Youth Services has custody of the child.

Neither parent showed up for a child welfare hearing Thursday. By Monday, police had obtained arrest warrants for the couple.

Staley and Klein will be arraigned by District Judge Lewis Stoughton today on charges of reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of children. Previous charges have the pair locked up.

In July, Klein failed to appear in court for sentencing after pleading guilty to two counts of possession of a controlled substance. The charges stemmed from a May 2006 arrest by Butler Township police.

A bench warrant was issued for her arrest on Aug. 2, and she faces $681 in fines and court costs.
