The Foireann girls AAU basketball team recently captured the 16-and-under ASE Hotshotz Monroeville Classic Basketball Tournament, defeating Matrix 48-32 in the championship game.
Butler County team members include Rachel Doutt, Jenna Manuel and Ashley Onufrak of Butler and Kristen Gagen and Megan Gray of Knoch. The team is coached by Dana Petruska.
The Butler fourth- through sixth-grade team wrapped up the season with a 7-3 record after suffering losses to Hampton 16-11 and Upper St. Clair 11-3.Against Hampton, Clay Bachman scored four goals while Nick Whann added three goals, Sebastian Moran two and Ben Tackett and Phillip Schneck one goal each.Tackett had two goals and Whann one in the loss the USC.
The Butler boys lost to Hampton in overtime 8-7 and defeated Upper St. Clair 11-3 over the weekend to finish the season at 5-12.Cody Bachman and Nathan Barthlow had two goals apiece against Hampton. Michael Schneck, Derek Kaufman and Matt Bartley each tallied one goal while Schneck added three assists, Jake Whann two assists and Kaufman one assist.Bachman registered five goals in the win against USC while Schneck added two goals and Barthlow, Bartley, Whann and Brian Bresnahan one apiece. Hunter Ligo made 13 saves in net for Butler.Bachman won the team's Offensive MVP award while Nick Signorino was Defensive MVP, Dominic Farmer the Coaches MVP and Jesse McFarland received the Most Improved Player award.
