Butler teams miss titles, but make track WPIALs

BUTLER TWP — The Butler boys 1,600-meter relay team did what it needed to do Tuesday.

In order for the Golden Tornado to win the section title outright against North Allegheny, it all came down to the triple jump.

Unfortunately for Butler, the Tigers' Jeff Greco ripped off a school-record leap of 46 feet, 1½ inches that sealed NA's 77-73 victory over the Tornado.

The Butler boys did rout Pine-Richland 120-30 to lock up a WPIAL Class AAA team playoff spot along with North Allegheny (6-1).

The Tornado girls (6-1) did the same, defeating Pine-Richland 84-65, but a 102-48 loss to the Tigers (7-0) prevented the team from winning the section title as well.

"I thought we were in good shape after the 1,600 relay and going to that last event," said Butler coach Rick Schontz.

"We had two guys (Mike Martin and Logan Renwick) who have jumped over 44 feet and (Greco) gets a record. Our kids jumped well, but he jumped better," Schontz added.

"It's like telling someone, 'If we're going to win this meet, we need you to do what no one in the school's 51-year history has done,'" said Tigers coach John Neff.

"(Greco) ends up doing it twice, the 46-1½ and had another that would have been the school record,"Neff added.

Neff pointed to two other critical points of the meet that made a big difference — the Tigers' sweep in the 3,200 run, which preceded the Tornado's 1,600-meter relay win, and in the throws, where the Tigers outpointed Butler 25-2.

"We didn't do as well in the throws, and we knew they were strong," said Schontz.

Schontz was impressed with his sprinters, who placed 1-2 in the 100, 200 and 400 events overall.

"I can't say enough about our sprinters," said Schontz. "We won all three relays. Unfortunately, we were not able to hold on."

Neff made sure his team knew the implications a loss to the Tornado would bring.

"I told the boys this meet, it's do-or-die. We have not missed the playoffs since I can recall," said Neff. "Since 1969, this team has made the playoffs, and NA has only had a track team since 1956."

"I told them we'd win with some individual matchups and said 'No matter how bad things might be going, try and beat the kid beside you,'"Neff added.

In the girls meet, North Allegheny captured 13 of 18 events in downing the Tornado.

Butler's lone overall winners in both meets were Skye Sankey in the pole vault (10-0) and the 400 relay team (52.5).

"What didn't help us today was Ashley Lotz (ankle) didn't compete," said Butler girls coach Rod Harris. "Amanda Malecky ran a 60 flat (in the 400. She's had a stress fracture in her femur.

"We're trying to run her a race here, a race there. She did what she needed to do, a second place against NA and a first place against Pine-Richland," Harris added.

Harris is hoping to get Malecky to the WPIAL qualifiers and finals and advance to the state meet for the third time, having done so as a freshman and sophomore.

Other standout performances for Butler included a personal-best 36-9½ in the shot put for Amy Achesinski and one for Lea Renwick in the 200 (26.5).

"Hannah Rekich and Emily Miller, they've been a 1-2 punch for us in the hurdles," Harris said.
