Unlucky 7th

Mars third baseman Zach Zollner fields a ground ball Wednesday in the Planets' 6-1 loss to Ambridge.
Miscues hurt Mars in loss to Ambridge

ADAMS TWP — The weather didn't make Wednesday's Ambridge-Mars baseball game a smooth one, but the seventh inning proved to be especially bumpy for the Planets.

Two hit batsmen, an error on a possible double-play grounder, a fielder's choice that led to two runs and a bad-hop RBI single culminated in three insurance runs in the Bridgers' 6-2 Section 1-AAA victory.

Despite the rainy and windy conditions, the pitching matchup was a good one. Ambridge's Nate Stonfer allowed four hits over six innings, striking out eight and walking three.

Mars' D.J. Cannon struck out 10 batters and walked one in 6X\c innings, but allowed seven hits and hit three batters.

"We just didn't make the plays behind D.J.," said Mars coach Andy Bednar.

Mars had a 2-1 lead entering the fifth inning before the Bridgers scored two runs and took the lead for good.

Cannon opened the inning by hitting Ambridge's Cory Moyer, then striking out Chris Mylan. Rick Moyer lined an RBI single to tie the game and advanced to second base when center fielder Anthony Ciafre didn't field the ball cleanly.

Cannon fanned Pat Zehnder for the second out, but Bryan Borkowski lined a run-scoring single for a 3-2 lead.

"The inning they went ahead, that's when things went downhill," said Bednar.

The Bridgers (4-3, 2-1) retired the final 10 batters of the game. The last Mars player to reach base was Ryan Ganter, who made it on an error with two outs in the fourth inning.

In the seventh inning, Cannon started by hitting Mylan, then Rick Moyer was safe on a fielder's choice when third baseman Zach Zollner's throw was misplayed by second baseman Ganter.

Cannon hit Zehnder to load the bases before Borkowski hit a grounder to shortstop Ryan Schroth.

With no play at home, Schroth turned to second base, but with no one covering the base, tried to race Zehnder to the bag.

Zehnder was safe and Rick Moyer broke for the plate and beat the throw for a 5-2 lead.

Cannon struck out Kaunert and Chris Harris, but pinch-hitter Eric Poplowski's ground ball bounced high over the glove of Schroth at short to drive in the Bridgers' sixth run.

Nate Cybak pitched the seventh inning for the Bridgers and struck out the side to end the game.

"This is new for us," said Ambridge coach Mike Marvin, whose team joined the section this season. "We have a lot of seniors, and when we came back and beat Butler earlier this year, it was our senior leadership."

Ambridge had taken a 1-0 lead in the first when Borkowski had a two-out RBI blooper down the left-field line.

Mars tied the game in the second when, with two outs, Chip Hasek and Josh Bender hit consecutive singles. Ciafre walked to load the bases, then Hasek scored on a wild pitch.

Ganter walked to load the bases again, but Stonfer got Drew Glavin to strike out on a check swing.

Mars took its only lead in the fourth when Josh Bender, who had doubled with one out, scored on an error with two outs.
