Butler edges Raiders twice
JACKSON TWP — When the Butler and Seneca Valley track teams faced off Tuesday, both the boys and the girls meets came down to the wire.
In the end, the Tornado boys won. No, wait, Seneca Valley won. Maybe it was Butler? No one knew for sure.
After checking and re-checking, Butler did squeak out a 76½ -73½ victory over the Raiders. In the girls matchup, Butler prevailed, edging the Raiders by a 77-73 score.
A late push on the track side by Chris Cipro and Louis Butler helped the Raiders boys close the gap, taking the top two spots in the 3,200 run before the Tornado's 1,600 relay team pulled out the win when Dan Dickey came from behind and outkicked Mason McLaughlin down the final straightaway.
"I didn't think Dan could make it up, but it was a gutsy run," said Seneca Valley coach Wayne Roccia.
From there, the meet came down to the discus, where Butler needed to grab the top two spots for the section victory.
Butler's Matt Cooper and Mike Schontz led the way with throws of 129 feet, 2½ inches and 120-11, respectively, to seal the win.
"We had to go 1-2 in the discus, and they came through," said Butler boys coach Rick Schontz. "They logged in a lot of nice performances. Finishing 1-2 in the (110 high hurdles by Brian Burka and Logan Renwick) early was huge."
"We felt it would be a close meet," said Roccia on the boys meet. "We knew what (Butler) had done in the first few meets and they knew what we had done.
"We knew it would come to a second-place here, a third-place there. Unfortunately, we came up on the short end of it," Roccia added.
Butler (3-0) had eight different individual winners while the Raiders' Cipro was the meet's lone multiple event winner, also picking up first in the 1,600 with a time of 4:30.63.
"This was a barnburner," said Schontz. "You had two great teams. ... If we ran this meet 10 times, it would be split 5-5,"Schontz added.
Another highlight was the Seneca Valley school record of 6-5½ in the high jump that was set by Connor Barrett.
In the girls meet, Butler swept the pole vault event to clinch the win and also used sweeps in the shot put and discus, with 1-2 performances in both by Amy Achesinski and Katherine Sylvia, respectively, to highlight the field events.
Butler (3-0) took the victory despite winning only six of the 17 events, but the Tornado outpointed the Raiders 49-15 in those events.
"Right now, we are struggling a little. We're hurt, but we're also a young team with 37 freshmen," said Butler girls coach Rod Harris.
Harris pointed to efforts like those of freshman Olivia Bresnahan, who was second in the high jump with a jump of 5-4, behind the Raiders' Da'Lynn Mills (5-6), and a third-place by Cassie Cygan in the long jump.
Mills had a huge meet for the Raiders (3-2), winning the 100 (12.83), 200 (26.09), high jump (6-5) and as a member of the 400 relay team.
Other Raiders who won two individual events include Jen Boyd in the long and triple jumps and Erin Lopresti in the 400 and 800. Both were members of the winning 1,600 relay team as well.
