Mostowy

Michael Mostowy, 84, of Bruin died Monday at UPMC Northwest hospital, Fran-klin, after a brief illness.

Born in Saxonburg, June 25, 1922, he was the son of Michael and Bessie Spryn Mostowy.

His father died when he was 3, and the family moved to their present farm in Bruin when he was 10.

Mr. Mostowy graduated from Bruin High School in 1940. He was a lifelong farmer and was granted a deferment from military service during World War II because he was a full-time farmer.

In 1960, he became the county executive director of the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service Office for Butler County, now known as the Farm Service Agency, and retired after 30 years.

In 1989, he received the annual Bullshipper Award in recognition of his contributions to Butler County agriculture; and in 1998, he was inducted into the Pennsylvania Voters Hall of Fame for voting at every November election for 50 consecutive years.

He was a member of the original board of directors instrumental in the building of the Petroleum Valley Medical Center and did the landscaping around the building.

He had a talent for growing fruits and vegetables and shared them with friends, family and nursing homes.

He was a Methodist.

Surviving are his wife, Joey Ann Mostowy, whom he married in 1956. Also surviving are four sons, Michael Jan, his wife, Stephanie, and children Brittany, Michael and Michelle of Hughesville; Timothy Blake, his wife, Sandra, and children Blake, Brent and Brooke of Tipton, Mich.; Kipper Scott, his wife, Cathy, and children, Amanda, Nicole and Lance of Murrysville; and Nye Grant, his wife Shelly, and children, Kaelan and Lachlan of Gastonia, N.C.; and a daughter, Kara Dee Rutowski, her husband, Tom, and son, Ethan, of Upper St. Clair.

He also is survived by a stepsister, Violet Streitman of Cabot.

Five siblings and two stepsiblings preceded him in death.
