G. Arlene Shultz, 71, of Jamestown, Pa., passed away at 4:25 a.m. Sunday at the UPMC Horizon Hospital, Green-ville, after a courageous, 20-month battle with leukemia.

Born in Natrona Heights, Sept. 23, 1935, she was the daughter of the late George and Gladys Schoentag Summerhill.

Mrs. Shultz was a graduate of Har-Brack High School. She earned her bachelor's degree in biology from Thiel College and a master's degree in biomedical statistics from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. She also pursued additional graduate work at Westminster College.

She dedicated her life to the spiritual, physical, and mental well-being of youth. She worked for both the Allegheny Health Department and the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. She was a substitute science and math teacher at several area schools including Williamsfield, Ohio, Mill Creek and Villa Maria Academy in Erie, Mount Lebanon in Pittsburgh, and Slippery Rock. For 18 years, she taught chemistry, math and science at Laurel High School in New Castle.

She was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Greenville. She sang in church choirs for more than 60 years and was a member of the first Thiel Touring Choir in 1953. She sang with the Greenville Community Choir, the Bach Society and the Thiel Alumni Choir.

She remained an active participant at Thiel College after her graduation and was both a class agent for the Class of 1957 and served on the alumni board.

Her many hobbies included reading, traveling, and sewing — winning several awards for her work with counted cross-stitch.

She was an active volunteer in the community and engaged in many service projects with Rotary. She loved to travel and visited all 50 states and toured Europe and Asia extensively with her family.

Her family came first in her life. She was the wife of Dr. H. Charles Shultz, formerly of Erie, whom she married Aug. 8, 1959.

She was an exceptional wife, mother and grandmother. Their three children and eight grandchildren were her pride and joy. They include two daughters, Cathy and her husband, Kip, Mostowy of Murrysvilleand Cindy and her husband, Richard, von Hollen of Galena, Ohio; a son, Michael and his wife, Tracey, Shultz of Jamestown; two brothers: George and his wife, Arlene, Summerhill of Reno, Nev., and Gene and his wife, Patty, Summerhill of Coraopolis.

She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Amanda, Christopher, Katie, Nicole, Henry, Jonathan, Lance and Sarah.

<B>SHULTZ </B>— A memorial service for G. Arlene Shultz, who died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2006, will be held at 2 p.m. Dec. 30 at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Greenville, with the Rev. Martin Roth officiating.The family will receive friends in the church library from 1 to 2 p.m. Dec. 30.Cremains will be inurned in the columbarium at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 1645 W.
