Rams rumble all over Knights in 35-0 win

PINE TWP — Pine-Richland controlled every facet of the football game Friday night.

The score, Rams 35, Knoch 0, spoke to that.

"I want to congratulate my team," said Rams coach Clair Altemus. "This is the first game that I felt we played together the way I knew we could."

Pine-Richland split up seven touchdowns among fullback Ben Scherer, running back Vince Veltre, quarterback Spencer Whipple and wide receiver Matt Klimczyk.

Scherer struck first, barreling nine yards into the end zone with 7:25 remaining in the second period. The run was set up four plays earlier by a 25-yard hookup between Whipple and Klimczyk and a 10-yard first down run by Veltre.

"We knew we wanted to establish the run," said Altemus. "Our fullback is one of the best athletes on the team, so we know we can turn to him to eat the clock up and keep the other team off the field."

Klimczyk and Whipple hooked up again for 31 yards and the second Rams' touchdown to culminate a two-play, 43-yard drive. The two found each other again with less than a minute on the clock in the first half for an 8-yard touchdown pass, taking advantage of a Knoch fumble on its own 20-yard line.

"They just came at us," said Knoch coach Mike King. "They had that big fullback, and they ran the ball right at us. We were not able to stop them once the train got rollin.'"

Coming out just as fierce in the second half, Pine-Richland (3-0, 2-0) held the Knights to just 50 yards after the break, allowing the offensive attack of Scherer and Veltre to strike again.

"It's a great testament to our defense," Altemus said. "Last week, we held Franklin Regional to just three points, and to come up with a goose egg this week feels really great."

Even though he was only able to find his way into the end zone one time, Veltre led the Rams' attack with 141 yards.

"They can really run the football," King said. "They run that Power-I offense, and they work with a big offensive line that blocks well, so it works for them."

Not much went right for Knoch (2-2, 1-1).

JustinMcGowan had just 39 yards on nine carries and Zack Gross passed for just 47 yards.
