Turn yard into a relaxing getaway
The pace of everyday life has been turned up a notch as of late. Mothers are working longer hours, racing to and from meetings and appointments and generally operating a fast-paced schedule. Maintaining this momentum can have some consequences, especially elevated stress levels.
According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, stress can manifest in a number of symptoms, including upset stomach, anxiety, headaches and overall fatigue.
Although this is still being investigated, stress may also contribute to the development of heart disease and stroke. Preliminary evidence shows that those with high stress levels have higher blood cholesterol, an increase in blood pressure and have blood platelets that are more likely to clump together in blood vessels.
It is important to slow down and manage stress whenever possible to live a longer life — one you can enjoy. One way to do so is to create an area in the home that serves as a sanctuary. Oftentimes, the backyard is an ideal place to do so because of the connection with nature and fresh air. Additionally, by introducing certain items into your yard, you can certainly create a relaxing oasis.
• Water fixtures — The sound of gently cascading water has the potential to induce feelings of tranquility. That is why there are so many "white noise" machines and relaxation tapes that feature sounds of a stream or the ocean. If you're not in the middle of the woods or beachside, rely on a man-made water element to do the trick. Erect a fountain or small waterfall in your garden. Or, build a koi pond and put in an aeration device to keep the water moving.
• Wind chimes — Available in a number of soothing tones and styles, many people enjoy the gentle sound of wind chimes in the breeze. Experiment to find out which pitch is the most relaxing to you and then hang your chimes in a convenient backyard location.
• Bird feeders — Watching animal life frolic is another way to relax. Invite birds to your yard so that you can hear their sweet chirps and enjoy their antics by installing a bird feeder. When purchasing, also consider buying devices that are proven to thwart the attempts of squirrels trying to raid the bird seed. Otherwise, your bird feeder may prove counterproductive if wiley squirrels prompt stress levels to rise.
• Hammock or swing — The gentle rocking motion of a hammock or large porch swing can provide a relaxing spot to catch a nap or read a favorite book. Much as a baby is lulled to sleep with the rocking motion of a bassinet, so will you be put into a calmer state of mind.
• Hot tub — You can easily soak away the stress of the world and the aches and pains of a hard day's work in a hot tub. They do double duty because they also provide the aural cues of running water. Today's models even boast soothing colored lights and other features designed to relax you.
• Gazebo or other "structures" — Sometimes closing yourself off from the world can be soothing in itself. Thick foliage, shade trees or a structure that creates a private spot to which you can retreat will allow for deep thought or just moments alone.
• Lighting — Whether cleverly placed accent lighting or gently flickering tea lights, bringing lighting to your yard allows you to retreat there any time of day or night. Sometimes the most peaceful time to enjoy a break is when the sun sets and the rest of the neighborhood is getting ready to call it a day.
