Jo Rankin of Butler, daughter of Gary and Sheila Rankin of Renfrew, was named Miss Jewel of the West during a recent pageant in Kittanning.Judged in the categories of interview, talent, swimsuit and poise, she will advance to the Miss Pennsylvania America Pageant on June 25 near Allentown. The winner of the state pageant will advance to compete for the Miss America Crown.A 2005 graduate of Butler High School, Rankin is a sophomore at Clarion University.———
<B>The Visiting Nurses Association (VNA) Hospice </B>of Western Pennsylvania raised $6,000 during its recent Friendship Luncheon fundraising event. Proceeds from the inaugural event will benefit VNA Hospice's Western Pennsylvania patients.More than 100 people attended the event, which featured Butler Mayor Maggie Stock as a speaker.The event was held at The Atrium in Prospect.———
<B>Jeffrey Tonini</B> of Maryland, formerly of Butler, was recently named the Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher in Anne Arundel County by The Washington Post.Ateacher at Broadneck High School in Annapolis, Md., he was honored for his work teaching calculus to high school math students.Tonini plans to return to Butler County to pursue a local teaching position.———
