Freeport wrapping up season Friday
With a chance to even its overall and Allegheny Conference records last Friday, Freeport saw a 14-6 fourth-quarter lead turn into a 25-14 loss.
The Yellowjackets (3-5, 2-4) will wrap up their conference schedule with a 7:30 p.m. home game against Deer Lakes Friday. The team will miss the WPIAL playoffs for the second consecutive season.
A Bryan Zimmerman scoring pass to Kirk Naedele and a 3-yard run by Zimmerman staked the Yellowjackets to a 14-0 halftime lead.
But Anthony Howell passed for a pair of scores and ran for another to lead the Vikings; comeback.
The Lancers (2-6, 1-5) were routed by Kittanning 35-6 last Friday, with Brian Becker scoring on a 25-yard run. Becker leads the Lancers' running game with 600 yards on 87 carries and five touchdowns.
Deer Lakes had lost to Burrell the week before 43-0 and is averaging just 15 points per game.
Summit Academy (4-4, 3-3) at Riverside (4-4, 3-3), Friday, 7:30 p.m. —
Thanks to wins in four of its past five games, Summit Academy needs to defeat the Panthers to grab the third and final playoff spot in the Tri-County North.
Earl Zarpeles threw for 229 yards and a pair of touchdown passes and ran for another score in a 28-14 upset of Laurel.
Should the Panthers win, they will get the final playoff berth.
Riverside is coming off a 44-0 loss to Mars. The Panthers are led by running back Jake Wickline, who has rushed for 757 yards and scored six touchdowns.
Sharon (5-2, 4-2) at Grove City (4-3, 3-3) — It's yet another must-win game for Grove City.
But the likelihood for a return trip to the playoffs probably evaporated two weeks ago in a loss to Hickory.
Still, the Eagles are coming off a 14-7 win over Mercer in a game in which freshman defensive back Dwayne Martin intercepted two passes, the second killing a Mustang drive.
Grove City will face a resurgent Sharon program shooting for a playoff spot.
The Eagles are technically still alive for a postseason berth, but they need to beat Sharon and hope Reynolds loses. Then they must hope the powers that be in District 10 choose them over other playoff candidates.
Clarion-Limestone (6-1, 5-1) at Union (0-7, 0-6)
— There will be one less Davis on the field than first thought.
Union's double dose of Davis, running backs Colton and Colby, will be on the field. Clarion-Limestone's Davis — quarterback Scott — won't.
Scott Davis was ejected just midway through the first quarter in a 41-6 loss to Clarion last week and must sit out this game against Union.
Union will try to snap a 28-game losing streak. The Lions' road loss was only its second in 42 regular season games.
