Hall ties NFL kick return mark, loses costly fumble in defeat

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Dante Hall's NFL milestone was overshadowed by his costly mistake.

Hall tied a league record with his sixth career kickoff-return touchdown, a 96-yarder in the second quarter against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

But his fourth-quarter fumble on another kickoff return set up the Eagles' final touchdown in their 37-31 comeback victory.

Hall, who added a 15-yard TD catch late in the fourth quarter, did not speak to reporters afterward - either about the turnover, one of four for the Chiefs, or his spectacular return.

After Philadelphia's Sheldon Brown scored on a 40-yard interception return, Hall took the ensuing kickoff at his own 4-yard line and started left. He cut back right, sliced through traffic near midfield and eluded a last-ditch dive by new kicker Todd France at Philadelphia's 40 on his way to the end zone for a 24-6 lead.

"I was trying to tackle Dante Hall, and that wasn't going to happen," said France, who was added this week after a hamstring injury left David Akers unable to kick.

It was the 10th kick-return touchdown of Hall's career, his first since a 97-yard kickoff return against Denver on Dec. 19, 2004. He returned kicks for scores in four straight games, an NFL record, in 2003.

Hall now shares the kickoff return record with Ollie Matson, Gale Sayers, Travis Williams and Mel Gray.

Hall is third on the career list for total kick-return touchdowns, behind Brian Mitchell (13) and Eric Metcalf (12).

The fumble came with 111/2 minutes to go in the game, after France's 37-yard field goal gave Philadelphia a 27-24 lead. The ball popped loose in a pile after Hall's 11-yard return, and Reno Mahe recovered for the Eagles at Kansas City's 25.

That set up Donovan McNabb's 1-yard scoring pass to L.J. Smith for a 34-24 lead.

"I think it was one of those lucky things," Mahe said. "Sometimes fumbles just happen like that. It's not like he was trying to do too much. Dante will be Dante, and sometimes luck falls our way and sometimes luck falls his way. We were just fortunate enough to come up with it."

The fumble shouldn't detract from Hall's accomplishment earlier in the game, Mahe said.

"He's always trying to break it," Mahe said. "That's why he's going to be remembered as one of the greatest returners ever in the game."
