Padres fumble away a victory

Brian Giles lost the ball, and Trevor Hoffman lost the lead.

By now, plenty of people are wondering if something else is going to slip away from the San Diego Padres.

Giles couldn't hold onto Randy Winn's tying, two-out triple off Hoffman in the ninth inning, and J.T. Snow hit a go-ahead single two batters later in the San Francisco Giants' 3-2 victory in San Diego on Monday night.

San Diego wasted Jake Peavy's strong outing and missed a chance to reduce its magic number for wrapping up the NL West to two. The Giants pulled within three games of the Padres with three games left in the series.

Bad bullpen work played its part in other NL playoff races. Atlanta blew an eighth-inning lead in a 6-5 loss to Colorado that prevented the Braves from clinching their 14th straight division title.

The Braves are assured of a tie for the NL East championship after Philadelphia's collapse against the New York Mets. The Phillies allowed four runs in the eighth of a costly 6-5 home loss that dropped them 1½ games behind Houston in the wild-card race.

"The game was huge," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "We're not out of it, but we need to win. We definitely can't lose any more games."

The Phillies took a 4-2 lead into the eighth, but Ugueth Urbina (4-3) put the first two batters on to start New York's comeback. Left-handed hitting Mike Jacobs capped the rally with a sacrifice fly to deep center off righty reliever Ryan Madson.

At Atlanta, Todd Greene hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning off Chris Reitsma (3-6) to help Colorado overcome a four-run deficit.

At Miami, Cristian Guzman had three hits and three RBI, Hector Carrasco (5-3) pitched six strong innings and Washington put Florida on the brink of playoff elimination.

At Milwaukee, Carlos Lee drove in two runs to match his career high with 113 RBI, and the Brewers rallied for five runs in the eighth to reach 78 victories for the first time since 1997.
