John C. Forcht
John Christian Forcht, son of Leland J. and Agnes M. (Hinchberger) Forcht, passed away on June 25, 2005, after a three-year battle with cancer.
Born at home on July 2, 1934, he remained a citizen of Butler for 70 years.
A retired businessman in partnership with his brothers, John was the reputable owner of the former L.J. Forcht Lincoln Mercury/Winnebago Co., which was founded by his mother and father. He was the service manager for years, then became manager of the Winnebago section of the company. Even after retirement, he continued to enjoy the adventures of touring the country by motor home with family and friends.
John's passion was scouting. He began his scouting career in 1947 as a member of Troop 1, YMCA. John became scoutmaster of Troop 6, which was sponsored by St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, in 1968. He earned the Scoutmaster Key in 1969.
Following his service as scoutmaster, he remained active with scouting through the Pioneer Trails Council and was on the board of the Moraine Trails Council. John was quoted as saying, "Scouting is good for boys. They learn to live together and look out for one another. Citizenship is fine, but learning to care for one another and respect for all and the 12 points of the Scout Law are most important."
John was the "fix it guy." His talents included furniture making and carpentry, home remodeling, electronics and mechanics. In 1959, John built a camp in Clarion. Due to John's generosity, three generations of family and friends have enjoyed "Turkey Knob" and carry with them many fond memories.
During his retirement, John volunteered at the Society of St. Vincent DePaul, repairing and restoring donated items.
John lived by believing in "doing the right thing." He was a devoted Roman Catholic and a lifelong member of St. Paul Roman Catholic Church.
Family was John's priority. He remained loyal to his wife and children for 51 years.
Surviving are his wife, SallyAnn (Phillips) Forcht of Valencia; one son, Leland J. Forcht II of Butler, two daughters, Mrs. Frederick (Roseann E.) Ludolff of Valencia and Rebecca B. Forcht of Butler; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were three brothers, three sisters and his parents.
