POLITICAL NOTEBOOK

Legislation that would allow Pennsylvania veterans to get license plates noting their military service is a step closer to becoming law, said Rep.

Dick Stevenson, R-8th, sponsor of the proposal."By establishing three license plates honoring their service in Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom as well as serving our country during peacetime, we hope that others will acknowledge their service," Stevenson said in a news release Tuesday, when the House of Representatives unanimously approved his bill. The bill, also co-sponsored by Reps.

Brian Ellis, R-11th, and

Daryl Metcalfe, R-12th, would establish specialty license plates for automobiles and light trucks: the Operation Iraqi Freedom veterans' plate; the Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) veterans' plate; and a special plate for veterans of no specific war. Each license plate would cost $20 in addition to the annual registration fee. Under the proposal, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is required to certify those veterans applying for such plates as serving in one of the above-mentioned military campaigns or in the case of the veteran plate, any military service by the applicant.Presently, several military plates for veterans of various conflicts are issued and include Pearl Harbor Survivors, Korean War, Vietnam Conflict, WWII, and Persian Gulf War.The legislation moves to the state Senate for consideration.
