Heather Young, the daughter of Walter and Denise Young of Chicora, has been accepted to Edinboro University for the fall 2005 semester.A senior at Karns City High School, she plans to major in elementary education.Young is currently a member of the National Honor Society, Ecology Club, French Club and BIC Club at Karns City High School.

<b>Josiah Everett,</b> the son of the Rev. Peter and Sandi Everett of Harmony, recently competed in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Spelling Bee.A sixth grade student at Portersville Christian School, he qualified for the spelling bee by winning a recent county-wide spelling bee.

<b>Alex Penn,</b> son of Dave and Denise Penn of Saxonburg, was recently awarded a full tuition award by the Honor's College at the University of Pittsburgh.A senior at Knoch High School, Penn is active in marching band, pep band, pit orchestra, chemistry club, A-V Club, German Club and the History Club.A National Merit Scholarship finalist, he is also a member of the track and field team, the academic challenge team and the National Honor Society.<br></br>

<b>Marissa McGuire</b> of Freeport, a senior at Lenape Technical School, has been named the winner of the State Career and Technical Education week theme contest.A student in the advertising/digital technology program, her theme was "Brighten Your Future...With Career and Technical Education."<br></br><br></br>

<b>Heidi Martin,</b> the daughter of David and Bonnie Martin of Butler, was recently awarded the Daniel Edge Memorial Scholarship for music production and engineering and the B.E.S.T. scholarship for performance at the Berklee College of Music.Martin is a 1998 graduate of Butler High School and a 2003 graduate of the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University, where she graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in music education.

<b>Abigail Meyer</b> of Evans City was recently inducted into the Rho Phi Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society at Butler County Community College.The daughter of Paul Meyer and Karen Kniess, she is pursuing a degree in business.

Allegheny College students, including senior <b>Dana Mazur</b> of Cranberry Township, recently won first-place honors at the annual Model NATO conference held at Howard University.Allegheny's team earned the Best Delegation title, as well as an award for its representation of a Partnership for Peace country, Ukraine.Conference awards are decided by votes from the student delegations of all competing schools.

Mars High School Chorus members <b>Grant Giel, Katie Roth and Mark Stenner</b> were selected by solo audition to perform in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Region I State Chorus Festival held recently at Norwin High School.

Several students at Mars Middle School have been selected to perform with the 2005 Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Middle School Band April 8 at Mars High School.Students are<b>Kelly Acree,Christopher Ausefski,Jamie Bender,Samantha Brandon,Madeline Campbell,Teri Dederer,Kayla Esterline,Harmony Fredley,Libby Himmelstein,Jake Miszuk,Jessica Reno,Mark Sackley and Vincent Smith.</b>

Mars Middle School's MathCounts Team took third place at the Midwest Chapter PSPE Math Counts competition at Grove City College.Team members<b>Aundrey Grinshpun,Jessica Kimbell,Ryan McKenzie,Amy Mikalauskas,Jessica Reno,Eric Routhieaux,Derek Sitterly and Rachel Turkovich</b>competed against teams from nine other school districts.Turkovich finished ninth and Grinshpun's fourth-place finish will advance him to the state competition.

Four Mars High School students' projects have been selected as winners in Mars Borough's Flag Design Competition.Junior <b>Kelly Berry</b> won fist place;sophomore <b>Luke Martin</b>won second;senior <b>Nicole Banfield</b>, third; andsenior <b>Katie Dederer </b>earned an honorable mention.The program, funded by the Mars Borough Parks and Recreation Committee, was established to find a unique flag design for display on light posts along Main Street in Mars.Winners will be honored during an awards ceremony at 8 p.m. Monday in the borough building.
