Mary Schirmer Rieger

Mary Lois Schirmer Rieger, 91, of Butler died Wednesday in the emergency room at United Community Hospital, Grove City.

Born March 23, 1913, in New Castle, she was the daughter of Carlyle O. and Mae Van Houten Wolford. In 1921, her mother died of pneumonia; and she was adopted along with her brother by John Christopher and Jessie Johnson Schirmer.

She was a 1931 graduate of Butler High School and had worked for Butler Eagle Publishing, as a teletype operator for the American Rolling Mill Co. and as a medical secretary at Butler Memorial Hospital. She retired from the American Heart Association in 1975. She served on the Franklin Township Board of Elections for 21 years.

Mrs. Rieger was a former member of North Main Street Church of God, where she belonged for 65 years, served as a Sunday school teacher, was active in the Sanctuary Choir and was the last charter member of the Women of the Church of God Missionary organization. She also was a teacher's aide in the church preschool. She was a member of the Christ Outreach Church, where she sang in the choir and attended the Wednesday night Bible study.

She enjoyed singing and playing the piano and harmonica.

Surviving are three sons and two daughters-in-law, Bill and Margie Rieger, Joel and Sandy Rieger and Chuck Rieger, all of Butler; a daughter and her husband, the Rev. Jean and George Staffa of Scenery Hill, Washington County; six grandchildren, Jenni Robinson, Tricia Rieger and Doug Rieger, all of Butler, Carly Cope of Texas, Herb Rieger of Slippery Rock and Corey Rieger of Pittsburgh; and four great-grandchildren. A half-brother, Glen Wolford of Pulaski, and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Her husband, Jack Louis Rieger, whom she married July 19, 1941, died Aug. 8, 1997. She also was preceded in death by a brother, three sisters and a grandson.

RIEGER - Friends of Mary Lois Schirmer Rieger, who died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at EDWARD L. RAISLEY FUNERAL HOME, 387 Main St., Prospect. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Dave West officiating.
