Charles 'Archie' Glenn
Charles Archibald "Archie" Glenn. 99, of Moores Corner Road, Slippery Rock, died of natural causes at 10 a.m. Monday at his home .
Born Sept. 19, 1905, on the family farm in Plain Grove Township, Lawrence County, where he lived his entire life, he was the son of Frederick Thomas and Harriett Jane Book Glenn.
He graduated from Plain Grove High School in 1924 and Bliss Electrical College in Washington, D.C., in 1928. He served in the 104th National Guard Calvary from August 1926 to February 1927.
In 1925, he drove the first school bus, an REO Speedwagon, in Plain Grove. He was active in farming with his father and children, was a lineman for the telephone company in Plain Grove for years, plowed the township roads, was active in township activities and hauled coal. He also was a member of the Plain Grove School Board.
Mr. Glenn retired from the maintenance department at Slippery Rock State College, now Slippery Rock University, in 1977. After his retirement, he mowed grass at Shamrock Golf Course and the lawns of the neighborhood. He was an avid golfer and bowler and participated in three leagues. He began golfing at the age of 69.
He was a member of the Plain Grove Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder, deacon and trustee and an active participant in Sunday school. When he died, he was the second oldest member of the church.
Surviving are a daughter, Ruth E. Wigton of Volant; three sons, Charles E. Glenn of Volant, James W Glenn of Slippery Rock and Harry C. Glenn of Butler; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren
His wife, Alma Margaret Uber Glenn, whom he married Nov. 16, 1934, died
April 27, 2001. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Estherjean O'Gieblyn; a brother, Loyal Glenn; and a sister, Mary J. Fecke.
<b>GLENN</b> - Friends of Charles Archibald "Archie" Glenn, who died Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock. Visitation also will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Plain Grove Presbyterian Church, where services will follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Herbert Goetz, officiating. Burial will be at North Plain Grove Cemetery Plain Grove Township, Lawrence County.Memorial contributions may be made to United Community Hospital Home Health Care or Plain Grove Presbyterian Church.
