Bonner, Chojnacki help Rock women snap losing streak
SLIPPERY ROCK - Kristen Bonner gave Slippery Rock University the lead. Amanda Chojnacki made sure The Rock kept it.
After netting just three total points in the first half, the duo combined to score 27 second-half points to lead the Slippery Rock University women's basketball team to a surprising 63-54 win over Edinboro Wednesday night at Morrow Field House.
SRU (8-15, 2-6) snapped a four-game losing streak. Edinboro (16-6, 3-4) entered the game ranked No. 7 in the East Region, having won 10 of 13.
"I didn't think either team showed up in the first half," SRU coach Laurel Heilman said. "I told the girls at halftime I was glad I didn't have to pay to watch this game."
Edinboro took a 22-18 lead to the locker room after a listless first half.
"We were too timid," said Rock point guard and Grove City High graduate Amber McFeely. "We were passing up good shots looking for the perfect shot.
"In the second half, we attacked the basket more. We made them worry about us instead of us worrying about them."
SRU scored the first seven points of the second half and never trailed again. Dana Stewart and Chojnacki each sank a pair of free throws and Bonner nailed a 3-pointer.
Bonner was held scoreless in the first half, but sank three treys in a five-minute span to help The Rock build a 33-24 lead.
Bonner had attempted only three shots in the first half.
"At halftime, my teammates told me to shoot the ball more, that they had faith in me," Bonner said. "That lifted my confidence.
"Once that first 3-pointer goes in - yeah, I want the ball," she added.
And Heilman wanted her to have it.
"The 3-point shot gets everybody excited when it goes in and it brings the crowd into the game," the coach said. "Unfortunately, it's been few and far between for us this year."
The Rock led by as many as 14 with 9:52 to play, but the Fighting Scots pulled within 51-44 with 2:29 remaining.
Chojnacki drained two free throws each at the 1:56, 1:08 and 57-second marks to seal the win. She finished with career-highs in points with 15 and rebounds with 11.
"They made their foul shots, and it's tough to come back when a team's doing that," Edinboro assistant coach Yvette Sparks said. "Bonner's 3-pointers really got them going.
"They hurt us on the offensive boards and stuck back second shots."
SRU held a whopping 54-25 advantage on the boards overall. Stacey Green had nine points and 12 rebounds.
Kelly Calderone had 16 points and Jodi Calderone 14 to lead Edinboro. The Scots average 71 points per game, but had only 26 with 9:30 left to play.
The win keeps SRU's slim PSAC playoff hopes alive. Three of its final four games - including Saturday afternoon at Lock Haven - are on the road, where The Rock is winless this season.
"We need to win all four to have a chance," Heilman said.
Wednesday's win also improved Heilman's record against Edinboro to 6-4.
"They seem to have our number," Sparks admitted. "We just don't match up well with them."
