Butler plays relaxed in 74-49 consolation victory

AMBRIDGE - The jitters were gone. The rout was on.

Senior forward Nate Hartung scored a career-high 19 points and 11 Butler players found the scoreboard Saturday night in a 74-49 boys basketball victory over Cornell.

The win came in the consolation game of the Ambridge Tip-Off Tournament at Ambridge High School.

"We came out tight Friday night (in a 50-45 loss to Ambridge). We played nervous," Butler coach Joe Lewandowski said. "Tonight we told the kids to just settle down. You had a great summer, now just play basketball and execute."

The Golden Tornado (1-1) ran away and hid early. An 8-0 run - capped by 3-pointers from Nick Martini and Jerrod Markle - snapped a 4-4 tie in the first period.

Adam Monday came off the bench and sank treys on consecutive possessions in the second quarter, the latter shot hiking the Tornado lead to 30-18.

"Adam ran some nice sets for us and knocked down a couple of big shots," Lewandowski said.

Butler's lead just kept growing. It peaked at 27 points (64-37) with six minutes to play as the Tornado emptied their bench.

"Once we fell behind by a lot, we just didn't have the firepower to come back," Cornell coach Bill Sacco said. "They shot the ball much better than we did."

Butler sank 26 of 40 field goal attempts, including seven treys. Hartung sank eight of nine shots from the floor - all lay-ups.

"If officials call the game the way basketball is supposed to be played and treat Nate Hartung like a regular player, I don't know if he can be stopped inside," Lewandowski said. "It's either a lay-up or a foul."

Markle contributed 14 points while Martini and Monday scored nine and eight, respectively, off the bench.

"We got tremendous play from our guards tonight," Lewandowski said. "I don't think there will be a better ball handler in our section than Jerrod Markle."

Markle said Hartung "had a huge game inside" and that the Tornado ran their offense Saturday.

"We never seemed to get into our offense Friday," he said. "A lot of guys were nervous. We were on edge all day. Tonight, we were more relaxed.

"Our inside game was dominant tonight and that set up our outside looks."

Butler's first two treys of the game came off assists from Hartung inside.

Jade Burka had eight of 32 Butler rebounds. The Tornado suffered 17 turnovers.

John Vlasic had 20 points and Matt Owens 18 points and eight of 29 rebounds for Cornell (1-1).

The Raiders defeated Butler in overtime of this tournament's championship game last year. Cornell went on to post a 24-4 record and reached the WPIAL Class A semifinals a year ago.

"Butler looks like a much improved team to me," Sacco said. "They have good personnel and a lot more depth.

"We brought back three starters from last year, but that's all we have right now - three starters. Three guys aren't gonna beat five."

Besides Vlasic and Owens, Cornell scored just 11 points Saturday.

"I feel like we have a lot of guys who can play," Lewandowski said. "But you can only play five at a time."

Nate and Noah Hartung made the all-tournament team. Quaker Valley won the championship game over Ambridge, 71-38, as junior guard Amir Johnson was named tournament MVP.
