John E. Leonard

John E. Leonard, 78, of Freedom Road, Butler, died at 2:25 p.m. Friday in the emergency room at Butler Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 16, 1925, in Nanty Glo, he was the son of Edward F. and Mary Park Leonard.

He was an Army veteran who served during World War II.

He received a bachelor's degree from Indiana (Pa.) University and a master's degree from Westminster College.

He retired in 1987 after 36 years of working as a senior high business teacher for the Butler School District. He conducted the adult education classes and the co-op program. He was very active in the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees.

He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in America, AARP and Tanglewood Senior Center.

He enjoyed music, gardening, golf and travel.

Mr. Leonard is survived by his wife, Jessie Fowler Leonard, whom he married April 28, 1951; three sons, John E. "Ted" Leonard Jr., of Mechanicsburg, David L. Leonard of Virginia Beach, Va., and James R. Leonard of Bristol, Tenn.; a daughter, Cathy Leonard Getch of Wilmette, Ill.; and eight grandchildren.

He is also survived by three brothers, William Leonard and Thomas Leonard, both of Nanty Glo, and Richard Leonard of Warren, Ohio; three sisters, Mrs. Helen Bush and Mrs. Thomas (Joan) Anderson of Niles, Ohio, and Mrs. June Zike of Highpoint, N.C.; and 17 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son.

LEONARD - Friends of John Leonard, who died Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday atTHOMPSON-MILLER FUNERAL HOME, 124 E. North St., Butler. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The Rev. Dr. H. Curtis McDaniel, pastor of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in America, will officiate. Interment will follow in the North Side Cemetery, Butler.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church in America, 420 N. Main St., Butler, PA 16001, or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Western PA/WV Chapter, 2 Gateway Center-13 North, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.
