Padres thump Pirates
SAN DIEGO - Mark Loretta needed just two at-bats to provide San Diego starter Jake Peavy with enough run support.
Loretta homered twice and had a career-high five RBI as the Padres routed the Pittsburgh Pirates 13-1 Friday night to stop a four-game losing streak.
Peavy needed just 10 pitches to retire the side in the first inning, and provide a spark for the rest of his team.
"That just set the tone," Loretta said. "We felt like he's going to go out there on a mission, let's just get him a couple of runs and we'll be OK. That was as impressive of a game as I've ever seen."
Loretta was impressive himself. He hit a solo homer in the first off Ryan Vogelsong, an RBI double to cap a four-run second inning, a sacrifice fly in a six-run sixth and a two-run homer off Salomon Torres in the eighth for his first career two-homer game.
"He is one of the best ballplayers in the league," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. "He's a guy we all look up to."
Peavy (8-3) won his third straight decision, allowing four hits and tying his season high with nine strikeouts. Peavy has allowed two earned runs or fewer in 15 of 16 starts.
"He had great stuff. When you're facing a guy like that with a big lead, you're in trouble," Pittsburgh manager Lloyd McClendon said. "He's one of the bright young pitching stars in this league."
San Diego matched its season high for runs, set in a 13-6 win at Colorado on July 19. It was also the most runs the Padres have scored in 58 homes games at Petco Park, which opened this season.
Peavy also had a two-run single in the sixth, and Phil Nevin capped the inning with a three-run double for an 11-0 lead.
Pittsburgh has lost five straight road games and eight of nine overall. Vogelsong (3-8) gave up five runs and four hits in 1
innings.
"I don't think I threw one pitch where I wanted it to be," Vogelsong said. "I was surprised I got anybody out at all. I was all over the place."
After Loretta's 11th home run in the first, San Diego scored four more in the second. Khalil Greene hit a run-scoring infield single, Sean Burroughs had an RBI grounder off Dave Williams, shortstop Jack Wilson's throwing error allowed another run in and Loretta doubled for a 5-0 lead.
Pittsburgh scored its only run in the seventh on Ty Wigginton's RBI single following an error by third baseman Rich Aurilia.
