Spangler sparks Tornado to win over Gateway

Heather Spangler singled, doubled and drove home a run to pace the Butler softball team to a 9-7 victory over Gateway Tuesday.

Butler used a five-run second inning to open up a 6-0 lead, but the Gators countered with five in the bottom half to pull close.

Ali Schnur added a pair of hits, while pitcher Megan Marra scattered 12 hits for Butler.

In other action:

Shelby Waltman struck out 12 and Kristen Macurak singled, doubled and tripled as Karns City opened KSAC play with a 14-9 defeat of North Clarion.

Susie Yurko doubled for one of three Slippery Rock hits in a 14-2 season-opening loss to Hickory.

Grove City (2-0) scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat West Middlesex, 2-1. Ali Gomola singled home Katie Sonntag to tie the game and the winning run scored during a rundown between third and home on the play.
