Pioneers split season-opening softball twinbill

Karns City graduate Sarah Callender struck out six and pitched a three-hitter as the Butler County Community College women's softball team defeated Westmoreland County Community College, 4-1, in the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday.

Westmoreland won the first game, 6-5.

In the Pioneers' second-game victory, Moniteau graduate Stacey Tiche, Butler graduate Heather Graham and Karns City graduate Kayla Thompson all had a single and RBI.

Moniteau graduate April Vogel struck out 10 and surrendered five hits for BCCC in the first game. Thompson doubled, Karns City graduate Jody Irwin and Laine Beckwith both had a single and two RBI.

BCCC committed four errors in the loss.

The Pioneers (1-1) play April 6 at Potomac State.
