Georgia Tech ends two streaks with one win

Georgia Tech ended two streaks with one big victory over Duke.

The 19th-ranked Yellow Jackets beat No. 3 Duke 76-68 Wednesday night for their first win over the Blue Devils since the 1995-96 season - a span of 15 games.

The victory also snapped Duke's 41-game home winning streak, the longest in the nation, and a run that had been going since February 2001.

"Over the years, Duke's been the elite team in the conference, especially winning the tournament five years in a row," Georgia Tech guard Jarrett Jack said. "Coming out and beating them on their home floor is a big statement."

The loss wasn't enough, however, to keep Duke (24-4, 12-3) from winning the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season title for the sixth time in eight seasons. The Blue Devils clinched it when second-place North Carolina State lost to Maryland at home later Wednesday night.

It was the highest-ranked opponent Georgia Tech beat on the road since winning at No. 1 North Carolina in February 1994. The Yellow Jackets (21-8, 8-7) had lost the three previous meetings at Cameron Indoor Stadium by 20, 25 and 44 points.

"To come in this building and play the way they did, I can't tell you how proud I am and happy I am for them," said coach Paul Hewitt, who earned his first win in eight tries against Duke. "We came into this building the last three years and walked out of here feeling pretty low."

Luke Schenscher scored 14 points, including several key second-half baskets, for the Yellow Jackets, while B.J. Elder and Isma'il Muhammad each added 12.

J.J. Redick scored 20 of his 24 points in the second half for the Blue Devils, while Duhon had 11 points, seven assists and seven steals. Freshman Luol Deng, who came in averaging 14.7 points and 6.9 rebounds, had three points on 1-for-14 shooting.

Duke's last home loss was 91-80 to Maryland. Pittsburgh's 40-game home winning streak was ended by Syracuse on Sunday, and the current longest streak is 28 games by Wisconsin, Austin Peay and Stephen F. Austin.

Cliff Hawkins scored a career-high 21 points and tied his personal best with 11 assists to lead the Wildcats. Kentucky (22-4, 12-3 Southeastern Conference) shot 51.7 percent, including 13-of-22 from 3-point range.

John Gilchrist, benched for the first five minutes for being late to team breakfast, scored 21 points and Maryland bolstered its NCAA tournament hopes with the road win.

Luther Head put in an offensive rebound as he was falling to the floor with nine-tenths of a second left in overtime to give the visiting Illini their ninth straight win.No. 20 Memphis 83, TCU 56Sean Banks scored 25 points for the Tigers (21-5, 12-3), who won for the 12th time in 13 games and moved into first place in Conference USA, a half-game in front of Cincinnati.Chudi Chinweze had 16 points for the visiting Horned Frogs (11-15, 7-8), who lost for the fourth time in six games.No. 21 Kansas 78, Nebraska 67Wayne Simien scored 22 points for the Jayhawks (19-7, 11-4 Big 12), who won on senior night for the 21st consecutive year.Brian Conklin had 14 points for the Cornhuskers (16-10, 6-9), who beat Kansas 74-55 loss at home on Feb. 15.No. 25 Louisville 75, Saint Louis 48Francisco Garcia had 17 points, six assists and five rebounds for the Cardinals (19-7, 9-6 Conference USA), who won their second straight after losing four in a row.Reggie Bryant had 15 points for Saint Louis (15-11, 8-7), which had been 11-2 at home this season.AP-ES-03-04-04 0339EST
