For once, a story about a wonderful charity

Choosing subjects to write about can really be a challenge.

Often the idiocy of elected officials from the top to the bottom almost demands we point out the disgust which they create from the public.

So when we come across a story that instead shows people in an honest, caring and loving light, we try to embrace it.

On Thursday morning, the Eagle had a wonderful story about a couple from Mars that has started a Butler County branch of a new charity, or at least new to this area.

The couple’s names are Ed and Elaine Snyder, and the nonprofit they represent is called Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP).

SHP builds and gives beds to children who otherwise are sleeping on the floor or in a chair every night. The Snyders have a neighbor and partner who assists with the new chapter of SHP. His name is Dave Nock. He and his family have jumped into the project with both feet.

The motto of the group is “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town.”

SHP recently conducted its first bed-building day, and 15 volunteers made and assembled 14 twin pine beds to be given to children ages 3 to 17 who need them.

SHP estimates that 2% to 3% of children in America do not have beds to sleep in at home. When the beds are delivered and assembled at the recipients’ homes, they also receive a mattress, sheets, blanket, comforter and pillow all for free. Each bed costs between $200 to $250 to build.

Anyone needing more information, so you can either volunteer or donate, can contact Elaine Snyder at elaine.snyder@shpbeds.org. The organization is a 501(c)(3), so your donation will also be tax-deductible.

Our first check to Sleep in Heavenly Peace will be in honor of a fine gentleman and community servant who passed away this week. Albert McGrath was a wonderful, kind and generous man who loved working with his hands. He served many hours with Habitat for Humanity after retiring from “the mill” after 42 years.

This new charity would have pleased him very much. Please consider making a donation in the name of someone you love who you know would have been heartbroken to hear that a child was sleeping on the floor.

Many thanks to the founders of the local branch of SHP, and we wish them tremendous success.

And please wear a mask.
