[naviga:h3]Symphony to play Beethoven[/naviga:h3]

The Butler County Symphony Orchestra’s season continues with a “Beethoven at 250” concert on Feb. 1 in the Butler Intermediate High School auditorium.

All of the season’s concerts begin at 7:30 p.m.

The Feb. 1 event will feature cellist Roman Mekinulov and Strauss’ “Don Quixote” and Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 5”

[naviga:h3]Programs set for February[/naviga:h3]

The Senator John Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh will host a full slate of free programs in February, including a commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Negro League baseball.

In recognition of Black History Month, the center will present several programs throughout February including a Smithsonian Channel Documentary Screening of “Black in Space: Breaking the Color Barrier” on Feb. 10 and a Negro League Centennial Commemoration on Feb. 13.

Long-term exhibits highlight African American heritage in Western Pennsylvania.

The History Center is at 1212 Smallman St. in the Strip District.

[naviga:h3]Aviary site of island escape[/naviga:h3]

Visitors to the National Aviary in Pittsburgh can experience “Escape to the Islands” through May 22.

Guests can get close to beautiful, rare birds and bats from islands around the world and journey through tropical habitats where birds fly, walk, and swim freely around them.

New interactive programs encourage visitors to engage with colorful island birds like American flamingos and Victoria crowned pigeons in natural habitats.

Daily at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., adventurers can volunteer to hold up a fish for a bird to grab on the go, with a National Aviary staff member highlighting island birds, such as the critically endangered Bali Myna.

[naviga:h3]College hosts folk-roots band[/naviga:h3]

The folk-roots band Stella Ruze will play a coffeehouse-style concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Breen Student Union on the campus of Grove City College.

The Showcase Series concert is free, and the public can attend.

The band consists of seven members and multiple instruments, including trumpet, bass and saxophone. The group recently released its first full-length album “The Greater Dog.”

[naviga:h3]Art studio has new hours[/naviga:h3]

The ceramics open studio at the Butler Art Center has announced new hours.

The studio will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
