Butler boys 4th in PIAA cross country meet

Three Butler runners medaled and the Golden Tornado boys finished fourth as a team in the PIAA Cross Country Championships Saturday in Hershey.

Sage Vavro placed ninth overall in the Class 3A boys race while C.J. Singleton was 13th and Skyler Vavro 24th. Zach Leachman of Mars placed 19th.

On the girls side, North Catholic freshman Julia Zalenski placed ninth in Class 1A. Teammate Emma McDonald was 18th.

Knoch's Sammy Jo Barnes was 29th in the Class 2A girls race. Cranberry Township resident Tara Lucot, a junior at Vincentian Academy, placed 35th out of 209 runners in the Class A girls race with a time of 21:02.6.

Knoch had three entries in the PIAA Class 2A singles and doubles tournaments, held Friday and Saturday at Hershey Racquet Club.Each won a first-round match before falling in the quarterfinals.In singles play, Laura Greb advanced with a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Loyalsock's Kaitlyn Savidge. Greb then lost to eventual champion Karissa Ghigiarelli of Riverside (District 2) by scores of 6-1, 6-1.Brooke Bauer joined Greb in the quarterfinals by defeating Westmont Hilltop's Alyssa Kush (6-1, 2-6, 7-5). South Williamsport's Olivia Dorner ended Bauer's season by earning a 6-3, 6-1 decision.In the doubles competition, Ally Bauer and Libby Conlon defeated South Williamsport's Lily Summerson and Lauren Peck (6-1, 6-2), but then dropped a match to Wyoming Seminary's Ella Krypel and Nicole Joanlanne (6-4, 6-1).

Trevor Ackelson scored the game-winning goal in the second period, assisted by Troy Gilliland, as Butler’s varsity hockey team defeated Pine-Richland, 2-1, Thursday night at the Baierl Ice Complex.Kyle Grasha had given the Golden Tornado a 1-0 lead by scoring on a breakaway with his team shorthanded.Bryce Rearick was the winning goaltender for Butler, stopping 38 of 39 shots.The Tornado play Seneca Valley at 7 p.m. Monday at the Baierl Ice Complex.
