Pulling a special double duty

Pulling double duty is becoming commonplace for high school football kickers these days.

Butler kicker Emory Douthett is also one of the prime scorers on the Golden Tornado boys soccer tream.

Slippery Rock kicker Nathaniel Willison is also one of the key players in the Rockets' boys soccer lineup.

Moniteau kicker Ethan McDeavitt is also a member of the Warriors' golf team.

Karns City kicker Owen Collwell is a productive offensive player for the Gremlins' boys soccer team.

Those are just four examples. Kudos to them and others like them.

Then there's Kaden Scherer of Karns City. What he is doing is even more extraordinary.

The 5-foot-8, 155-pound Scherer is a wide receiver and defensive back for the Gremlin football team. He also is a return man on special teams.

Scherer also plays on the Karns City boys soccer team and has been described by Gremlins coach Jim Grenninger as “a kid who runs the field the entire game.”

So how about this for a weekend? Scherer returns a kick 75 yards for a Karns City touchdown last Friday night at Clarion, along with playing on both sides of the football.

He goes home, undoubtedly gets to bed late that night, then gets up in time to report for the KC home soccer game against Brookville the following day. That game began at noon.

And Scherer made an impact in his team's 4-1 victory.

Playing such a physically active role on two teams in the same sports season — and playing games for those teams in different locations, 15 hours apart — is quite impressive.

Being a relatively small school, Karns City has shared its athletes for a lot of years. But those athletes have to be willing to be shared.

Last weekend, Scherer — and any other KC football-soccer players — went above and beyond the call of duty in that sense.
