In “Cauldron of Steel” playing at the Freeport Theatre Festival, George McMurtry (Mike Firek), founder of Vandergrift and the new steel mill, dances a soft shoe with town songbird, June Collecchi Corey (Sharon Riffer), as the town celebrates a new era of possibilities. The historical drama written by Rennick Steel celebrates the immigrants from southern Europe who built the town of Vandergrift. Performances are scheduled at 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday and July 26 to 28 at the theater on the Steele Farm, 2498 White Cloud Road, two miles south of Freeport off Route 356 in Allegheny Township, Westmoreland County.
