A win is a win

Karns City's Tyler Yough, after turning a double play from his shortstop position earlier in the night, delivers a pitch in the final inning of the Gremlins' 9-5 win over Clarion-Limestone Monday night at Pullman Park.Sebastian Foltz/Butler Eagle

The numbers from Karns City's baseball meeting with Clarion-Limestone on Monday reveal a sloppy game.

Both teams combined for just six hits, eight errors and 18 walks.

But KC coach Josh Smith was still satisfied with the outcome.

A four-run bottom of the fourth inning put the Gremlins ahead for good after an early 4-1 deficit. Three Lion errors in the frame aided KC's cause in a 9-5 victory at Michelle Krill Memorial Field at Historic Pullman Park.

“It wasn't pretty, but we stayed together,” said Smith. “Whether things are going up or down for us, it all comes down to how we adjust to things.”

Freshman Ty Belles started on the mound for KC, but was done after allowing three runs in two innings. All three tallies were unearned. He struck out two and walked three.

Colton Hutchinson came on and pitched 4.1 innings. He fanned seven, walked nine, but most importantly, allowed just two runs.

“Last time out (a 4-1 win over Keystone last Thursday), Ty was great,” said Smith. “He just didn't have his best stuff today.

“Hutch has been battling a groin injury, but he sucked it up and gave me what he had. I was happy with it.”

Hutchinson was pulled with one out and two on in the seventh. Tyler Yough came in and, after issuing a walk to load the bases, ended the game with a strikeout.
