Mysterious Evans City break-in must be solved

What is going on in Evans City?

That’s the question taxpayers and borough officials should be asking right now, after news last week that a still-unidentified person accessed the borough secretary’s office — apparently on multiple occasions.

According to council president Lee Dyer, there have been multiple instances of officials returning to the office and finding evidence that the office has been in use after hours.

The good news is that nothing appears to have been stolen.

But the bad news is still very, very bad: someone has apparently been making themselves at home in an office that contains confidential and personal information — again, according to Dyer: “Money ... checks ... all kinds of documents,” including personnel files. And there are still many outstanding questions to answer.

Who is this intruder? What were they doing in the borough secretary’s office? And why weren’t officials notified and camera footage reviewed until more than a week after the incident reportedly occurred?

Borough officials have changed passwords and locks in an attempt to make the office more secure, and that’s a good step to take.

But a better resolution to this matter is to determine who decided to avail themselves of the borough’s unwitting hospitality and determine what, exactly, they did while in the office.

It’s simply not good enough to change some locks and passwords and assume the security of the office has been restored.

If those locks and passwords were compromised once, they can be compromised a second time. Taxpayers and employees deserve to know that their records and facilities are secure, and if that security is compromised the borough will get to the bottom of what occurred, when it occurred, and whom is responsible.
