Bodiography ballet to be presented at BC3

“Lamentation” from the Martha Graham Dance Company will be the centerpiece of the Bodiography Contemporary Ballet performance Sept. 29 at the Succop Theater at Butler County Community College.

Butler County Community College will present a Bodiography Contemporary Ballet performance on Sept. 29 at the Succop Theater on campus.

The dance company founder Maria Caruso will perform the critically-acclaimed “Lamentation” from the Martha Graham Dance Company.

“Lamentation” is a modern dance solo choreographed by Graham to Zoltán Kodály's 1910 Piano Piece, Op. 3, No. 2.

“Lamentation” is known for its stark power. The soloist begins seated on a bench encased in a purple stretch tube, a cocoon of Graham's own making where only the head, hands and feet protrude. Rather than focus on a specific life experience, her role is to embody grief.

Rounding out the presentation will be a group premiere work by select Bodiography Contemporary Ballet artists, guest artists and La Roche College dance majors.

The show will begin at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $20 and are available at https://bccc-internet.choicecrm.net/templates/BCCC/#/events.

The late Martha Graham is considered to be one of the 20th century's most important dancers and the mother of modern dance. She was born in Allegheny, now Pittsburgh, on May 11, 1894.

She danced well into her 70s and choreographed until her death in 1991. Her company continues to perform internationally with a varied repertory.
