[naviga:h3]BLT concludes Coffee House[/naviga:h3]

Butler Little Theatre will host the last Coffee House of the season at 7:30 p.m. June 2 at the BLT, One Howard St.

Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10.

Featured will be Justin Parson who has been writing songs for 20 years.

While studying practical theology in Central Florida, Parson encountered other musicians and songwriters who reinforced and broadened his understanding of acoustic and folk music.

He toured with Tree By Leaf, a folk band based in midcoast Maine, playing guitar and mandolin. Settling back in Pennsylvania with his wife, Candy, Justin worked with John Malone and Jerome Wincek to form Big Jack Earl, an alternative folk band that recorded a self-titled debut album in 2004 and “Peppercorn Rent” in 2006.

In 2013, he recorded “Songs From the Spare Room.” He currently writes for and performs with an acoustic vocal band, The Jefferson County Line, among other projects.

[naviga:h3]Local filmmaker’s work at Cannes[/naviga:h3]

Celine Held, formerly of Butler, has a film nominated for an award at the Cannes Film Festival.

“Caroline,” a short film which she directed with her husband, Logan George, and appears in as the Mother, runs 12 minutes.

The pair are also credited for the script/dialogue.

The synopsis of the short film from the festival website says: “In the middle of a hot Texas summer, plans for a baby sitter fall through and 6-year-old Caroline is left in charge of her two younger siblings.”

Held is attending the festival in France, and awaiting the announcement Saturday of the winner from the eight entries in the short film category.

[naviga:h3]History group offers program[/naviga:h3]

The Butler County Historical Society will have a dinner and program at 5:30 p.m. June 7 at Tanglewood Center, 10 Austin Ave, Lyndora.

Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. followed by our program for the evening, “Fire on the Water.”

James Gindelsperger of Johnstown will present this program that covers the Confederate raider Alabama, which sank more than 60 Union merchant ships before it was sunk in an epic naval battle with the Kearsarge off the coast of France in 1864.

The subject is covered in a book by Gindelsperger and was the winner of the 2003 George Washington Honor Medal for Excellence. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Cost for the dinner and program is $12 per person. Reservations are required no later than June 4.

[naviga:h3]Program on Shawnee family life set[/naviga:h3]

PITTSBURGH — Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village, part of the Smithsonian-affiliated Senator John Heinz History Center museum system, will host a living history program called Life with a Shawnee Family on Saturday, featuring extended hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Shawnee Tribe member Jeremy Turner and his family will visit Meadowcroft’s 18th century frontier trading post to demonstrate what daily life was like for the Shawnee Indians who inhabited Western Pennsylvania’s hills and forests in the 18th century.

The Turner family and guests will demonstrate skills, including trapping techniques used during the early fur trade and native cooking techniques.

Visitors can explore the interior of a wigwam, inspect carefully recreated prehistoric artifacts, learn about American Indian agriculture, and try their hand at the atlatl, a prehistoric spear-thrower.

Admission is $15 for adults, $14 for senior citizens, and $7 for students and children ages 6 to 17.

[naviga:h3]N. Washington Rodeo slated[/naviga:h3]

NORTH WASHINGTON — The North Washington Rodeo will take place Aug. 14 to 18 at the rodeo grounds on Route 38.

The event takes place rain or shine.

Gates open at 6 p.m., and the rodeo starts at 8 p.m.

Dinners are available each night at the Social Hall at the rodeo grounds starting at 4:30 p.m.

PITTSBURGH — Carnegie Museum of Natural History will participate in International Museum Day on Friday.

The museum is hosting a full day of special programming for all ages. The events reflect the 2018 ICOM International Museum Day theme “hyperconnected museums: new approaches, new publics.”

Nineteen museum researchers will be in the galleries throughout the afternoon to answer questions and connect visitors to nature in new and exciting ways.
