Cummings helps SSA pick up state title

Butler County resident Meredith Cummings helped bring a state title to Shady Side Academy.

The senior was part of the Indians' girls 400-yard freestyle relay, which placed first at the PIAA Class AA Swimming Championships at Bucknell University Saturday night with a time of three minutes, 34.05 seconds.

The race was very tight, with Schuylkill Valley coming in second at 3:34.31 and Wyoming Seminary third at 3:34.36.

SSA's quartet, which also included Sasha Arefyev, Heather Grune and Lindsey Grune, entered the state meet seeded fourth. The Indians were fourth in Saturday's preliminary swim with a time of 3:36.29.

Cummings helped SSA win a WPIAL title in the event earlier this month.

Several other Butler County-area swimmers earned medals. That field was led by a trio of fourth-place finishes, including Mars' Andrew Pierre (4:42.23 in 500 freestyle) and Grove City's Emma Wilson (51.94 in 100 freestyle).

Grove City's boys also earned fourth place in the 400 freestyle relay, with the foursome of Will Rastatter, Will Hannon, Mason Wise and Ben McKnight coming in at 3:12.37.

GC received an eighth-place performance from Charlie Nesbit in the 100 breaststroke (59.95).
