CWNC girls win, boys fall

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic already had Keystone Oaks down, but a mammoth run in the second quarter put the Eagles out.

The Trojanettes outscored their opponent 23-1 in the period and cruised to a 74-41 PIAA Class 4A first-round playoff victory Saturday afternoon at Northgate High School.

“We played well offensively the entire first half, with seven or eight different players scoring for us,” said CWNC coach Molly Rottmann, whose team led 49-16 at the break. “Defensively, we did a great job of rotating and helping out.”

Tess Myers paced the Trojanettes, the WPIAL champions, with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Kylee Lewandowski added 20 points and seven blocks and Dani Short contributed 10 points.

Gillian Piccolino led Keystone Oaks (17-6) with 17 points.

CWNC (23-3) will face Ambridge in Wednesday's second round. The Trojanettes defeated the Bridgers, 49-42, in the district quarterfinals last month.

CWNC saw its season come to a close with a 63-51 loss to Greenville in a PIAA Class 3A first-round playoff at Meadville High School.

Greenville trailed 30-26 at halftime, but reeled off a 17-6 run in the third quarter to take the lead.

“It actually started in the second quarter for them when they hit four 3-pointers,” said CWNC coach Dave Long. “Then we just played a terrible third quarter. We've had trouble playing (well) for the entire game all season.”

Brian Davidson paced the Trojans (13-13) with 14 points and Ryan Feczko added 12.

Greenville (16-9), the District 10 runner-up, received a game-high 25 points from Joe Batt and 17 from Michael Blaney.

Long revealed that Saturday's game was his last as CWNC's coach. He did not go into detail regarding his departure, but the move comes after he was relieved of his coaching duties for several days earlier this season. He was reinstated as coach prior to the WPIAL playoffs.

Long coached North Catholic for 19 seasons, winning over 300 games and multiple district titles.
