Mars falls in playoff opener

Mars ended its varsity hockey season Monday night with a 5-3 first-round Penguins Cup Class AA playoff loss to Franklin Regional at Center ice Arena.

The Planets (9-11) fell behind 2-0 early in the second period before rallying to tie the game on goals by Patrick Roach and Braden Hanna less than two minutes apart in the frame.

Kevin Cakanac scored the game-winning goal for the Panthers (12-8) 2:31 into the third period. Roach scored his second power play goal of the game late in the contest before Franklin Regional's Nicholas Carretta scored an empty-net tally to ice the win.

Cakanac and Carretta scored two goals each for the winners. Will Scurci had two assists for Mars. Mathieu Sliva had three assists for the Panthers.

Planets' goaltender Danny Mitchell stopped 17 of 21 shots on net.

Mars went 2-for-5 on the power play.
