Seneca Valley earns sweep of Mars to keep season rolling along

JACKSON TWP — Seneca Valley's swimming and diving teams kept rolling Thursday night.

The girls and boys both improved to 7-0 with victories of 105-66 and 93-70, respectively, over visiting Mars.

“It's the first time since I've been here that both of our teams have gone this long without a loss,” said Raider coach Brian Blackwell. “Every time we win, it gives us more confidence, but we know the biggest tests are coming down the pipeline, like North Allegheny (Feb. 1).

SV's boys featured Connor Quiggle and Max Bredl, who both finished with a pair of top times in the 200 freestyle/100 backstroke and 50 freestyle/100 breaststroke.

Quiggle, a senior, qualified for states last year in the 500 freestyle. He hopes to close his high school career on a high note.

“I definitely want to get back to states,” he said. “I'm exactly where I want to be. I've been putting up personal-best times and I'm not tapered yet.”

Quiggle is also part of SV's 200 medley relay that broke the SV pool and school records in December. On Thursday, the Raiders shuffled their lineup a bit, but Jonathan Simoes, Owen Blazer, Bredl and Jake Lee still won the event.

Aside from events swam as exhibition by the Raiders, Mars' lone win in the boys meet was Andrew Pierre's victory in the butterfly. But Planet coach Todd Slobodnyak saw other positives.

“Andrew Ivory (second in IM and breaststroke) steps up every meet for us and he did again tonight,” he said. “Zach Leachman made his WPIAL cut in the 500 freestyle (placing second) and just missed it in the 200.”

Marleah Schlick, Kendall Craig and Bella Stefanowicz have been top performers for SV's girls this season. Schlick helped the Raiders finish with the top time in the 400 freestyle relay and Craig was second in the breaststroke. Stefanowicz swam in the medley relay and helped score points for the Raiders with a runner-up finish.

While Schlick is a junior, Craig and Stefanowicz are both freshmen.

“Our freshmen girls have made a huge impact for us,” said Blackwell. “We're excited about that.”

SV's Edie Sawyer earned wins in the 200 freestyle and butterfly while Katelyn Caccamo won the diving event and was a member on all three Raider relays that finished with top times.

Mars has its own freshman making waves on the girls side. Megan Smith won the 50 freestyle and breaststroke.

“She has a positive attitude and pushes hard,” said Slobodnyak. “She's leading the way with our new wave of girls.”

Mars (3-5 boys and girls) competes at Carlynton on Tuesday. Seneca Valley hosts Pine-Richland next Thursday.
