Grove City rolls in playoff opener

Eagles dominant in 45-7 triumph

SLIPPERY ROCK — Score early and score often.

Not a bad game-plan if you can pull it off.

Grove City did that and then some Saturday night, scoring touchdowns on its first six possessions in a 45-7 route of Fort LeBoeuf in their District 10 Class 5A football playoff game at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

“Our goal every game is to get a stop, then an early score,” Eagles coach Sam Mowrey said. 'The sooner you can take control of a game, the better.”

Grove City (10-0) had a 35-0 lead by halftime, putting the running mercy clock in effect for the entire second half. Brady Callahan connected on all nine of his first-half passes, six of those going to Logan Lutz.

Lutz turned those receptions into 100 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

“Brady knows how to run this offense and Logan knows how to get open,” Mowrey said. “He comes from a football family and he's a very savvy player.”

Trey Adams rushed for 141 yards and two touchdowns. He had the Eagles' final two TDs, the first on a 3-yard run with 59 seconds left in the first half, the latter on a 57-yard burst up the middle early in the third quarter.

Fort LeBoeuf (4-6) did not cross midfield until the final quarter. The Bison approached midfield late in the first quarter, but a Qadir Muhammad interception ended that threat.

“That's a good football team,” Bison coach Jeff Nichols said. “There's a reason why they're 10-0. They get it right.

“That is the elite program around here in 5A right now. We are aspiring to get where they are. Obviously, we're not there yet.'

A 28-yard Aidan Reed field goal extended Grove City's lead to 45-0 before Fort LeBoeuf finally got on the board. Tyler Scott's 19-yard touchdown run capped an 80-yard drive with 5:24 left in the game.

The Bison drove inside the Grove City 15 late, but an errant snap was recovered by the Eagles' Seth Davis with 1:01 to play.

Tyler Greer, who also rushed for 62 yards and a touchdown, recovered a fumble for the Eagles as well. Callahan had 51 yards rushing and a touchdown.

Fort LeBoeuf was limited to 156 net yards, only 23 passing.

“We just couldn't sustain much against them,” Nichols said.

The Eagles advance to the District 10 5A title game at 7 p.m. Saturday in Greenville. They will take on Meadville, a 19-7 winner over General McLane.

“We had some rainy weather during this week of practice, but our kids never lost focus,” Mowrey said. “(After a bye week), they were hungry to get back on the field and play. I think that showed.”

Grove City had 303 yards and 17 first downs in the first half. The Eagles finished with 397 yards and 22 first downs.
