Smithco in tie for golf lead

CWNC soph chasing WPIAL championship

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic sophomore Madie Smithco is tied for first place after Monday's first round of the PIAA Class AA Girls Golf Championship at Heritage Hills Resort in York.

Smithco and Mercyhurst Prep's Sarah White both came in with a 4-over-par 76 in the first 18 holes.

A-C Valley's Ellie Thompson shot a 105 at the event, which wraps up today.

Class AAA: Mars' Natalie Welsh shot an 89. Manheim Township's Ellen Wager leads the pack with an even-par 72.

Boys

Class AAA: Seneca Valley's Mark McNulty is in a 3-way tie for 21st place after shooting a 79. Central Catholic's Jimmy Meyers has the lead with a 1-under par 70.

Class AA: Weston Kimmey of Moniteau shot an 80, while C.W. North Catholic's Tre Bartony carded an 82.

Tulpehocken's Chase Miller has put a good down payment on a state championship, leading the field with a 3-under 68.

Boys Soccer

Slippery Rock benefitted from an “own goal” put into the Seneca net seven minutes into the second half and went on to post a 2-0 District 10 Class 2A playoff victory Monday night.

Ryan Sproat's second goal of the season extended the Rocket lead with 2:41 left in the game. Slippery Rock goalkeeper Duncan McCoy had preserved the 1-0 lead by stopping a breakaway with 12 minutes left.

McCoy made five saves in getting the shutout. Seneca goalkeeper Andy Rzepka made 19 saves in a losing cause.

The Rockets will play Titusville (12-7-1) at a site and time to be determined Wednesday.

Girls Soccer

CW North Catholic 5, Chartiers Houston 0 — The Trojanettes (14-4) continued their torrid streak with this WPIAL Class A playoff win at Pine-Richland.

CW North Catholic has won eight straight games, outscoring its foes 34-4 during that streak. Monday marked the team's ninth shutout of the season.

Ella Beibler scored two goals for CWNC. Tori Michalski, Emma Ivory and Olivia Boneznuto also found the net. Goalkeeper Andre Bean made eight saves for the shutout. The Trojanettes face OLSH (11-5-3), a 6-2 winner over Bentworth, in the quarterfinals.

South Park 3, Knoch 0 — The Knights (11-8) battled host South Park to a scoreless tie in the first half and trailed only 1-0 late in the second.

Becca Stockert made seven saves in goal for Knoch.

The Eagles (15-2-1) won their eighth consecutive game, seven by shutout. South Park has outscored its opponents 45-1 during its current streak.
