Rockets chasing 2-0 start Friday

This is one in a series of articles previewing this Friday's Butler County area high school football games.SLIPPERY ROCK — It might not have been the prettiest of wins, but Slippery Rock football coach Larry Wendereusz isn't going to quibble about it.“We'll take it,” Wendereusz said of the Rockets' season-opening 13-12 road win over Reynolds. “I'll never throw one back.”Greenville coach Brian Herrick had the same assessment of his team's 27-26 win over Hickory.“We made a lot of mistakes,” Herrick said. “We have a lot of things to clean up.”The two teams meet at 7 p.m. Friday at Slippery Rock hoping to do some house cleaning. And come away with a 2-0 start, of course.Slippery Rock's defense stole the show against Reynolds, Rod Williams in particular. The defensive end was dominant, recording two sacks and a key forced fumble late in the one-point victory.“Rod is a special talent,” Wendereusz said. “His speed was noticeable Friday night. He made some big plays on second and third down and got a stop on a fourth down, had a sack and a fumble.”The defense as a whole also played well.“I like the way we played defense,” Wendereusz said. “We stepped up at the end of the game and made some big plays to stop drives. When you have guys do that as a unit, it makes it a little easier for us. We bent a little, but didn't break.”Wendereusz, however, is still a bit concerned with his offense. That unit was inconsistent against Reynolds with a new quarterback under center in Jake Shaffer. The Rockets did move the ball at times, with Shaffer throwing for 61 yards and the three-headed backfield of Kaleb Kamerer, Hunter Prementine and Seth Slater combining to rush for 94 yards, but Slippery Rock also had trouble at time sustaining drives.“We have to get a lot better offensively,” Wendereusz said. “Hopefully another week of practice and another week in this system will help. We'll see the same defense for the third week (including a scrimmage).”For Greenville, it was the reverse. The offense clicked with two backs gaining more than 100 yards. Canyon Eells rushed for 125 yards and scored three touchdowns and Brady Gentile added 103 yards on the ground.Quarterback Nate Bell also had a solid game with 101 yards passing. But the Trojans defense coughed up some big plays in the passing game to Hickory.“They caught us on a couple of big pass plays,” Herrick said. “We have to work on that.”Greenville's run defense, though, held the Hornets to 36 yards on 27 carries.Herrick isn't expecting to hold the Rockets to such a paltry number. He also isn't expecting to pile up rushing numbers like last week against Slippery Rock.“They're very aggressive and have a very good team,” Herrick said. “They all fly to the ball. We're going to have to play extremely well Friday night.”Wendereusz is just as concerned about Greenville.“They're huge up front,” the coach said. “They look like a college team up front and they have those two running backs and a talented receiver (senior Michael Blaney). We have a challenge in front of us.”
