Musical Journey Series takes audience from Motown to Ireland

Nobuntu, an ensemble from Zimbabwe, will appear as part of the Slippery Rock University Performing Arts Series on Oct. 25.

SLIPPERY ROCK — The sounds of some of music's biggest acts, past and present, are part of the 2017-18 Slippery Rock University Performing Arts Series.

The Modern Gentlemen, originally brought together 10 years ago to serve as the background vocalists to Frankie Valli, will sing at 7:30 p.m., Sept. 15 in the University Union's Multipurpose Room. In addition to Valli, they've appeared with the Beach Boys, Tony Bennett and Smokey Robinson.

Nobuntu performs at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 25 in the Smith Student Center Ballroom. A five-part a cappella ensemble made up of young women from Zimbabwe, Nobuntu's repertoire is a fusion of traditional Zimbabwean music, Afro Jazz, gospel and crossover in voices with minimalistic percussion, traditional instruments such as Mbira and some dance movements.

Performing songs recorded or done by Michael Bublé, Shades of Bublé honors, but doesn't imitate, the style that Bublé brings to his concerts.

Members of the SRU Jazz Ensemble will serve as backup vocalists during the performance at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 3 in the University Union's Multipurpose Room.

The Legacy Motown Revue is a quartet, backed by the Sound Express Band, that takes their audience back to the heyday of Motown through the music of the Drifters, the Coasters, the Jacksons and The Temptations. The show is at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 2 in the University Union's Multipurpose Room

The Young Irelanders wrap up the series at 7:30 p.m. March 25 in the University Union's Multipurpose Room. Their sound is described as eclectic, where traditional Irish, Celtic, folk, jazz, country and popular music come together.

Tickets are available at www.rockalumnicafe.com/performingarts.

On Nov. 3, Shades of Bublé will perform songs recorded or performed by Michael Bublé.
