Suspect's tattoos help police make arrest in alleged theft

Witt Yost Jr.

A man’s distinct tattoos — a dollar sign on his face and the Monster Energy drink symbol on his neck — helped Butler police bust him on theft charges.

Witt Allen Yost Jr., 26, no known address, is being held in the Butler County Prison in connection with the alleged crime last week.

Witt is accused of making off with a man’s black winter coat and an Xbox One video game console and video game from a home on Shore Street about 7 p.m. Thursday, according to court documents.

The occupants told police that they only knew the suspect by the name Matthew Young, who they described as a white man. But they gave police a better lead by describing the tattoos on the man’s face and neck. The victims also noted the thief had other tattoos on his arms.

Additionally, they remembered he was wearing blue Nike shoes.

Police later got a tip of the suspect’s true identify. Officers eventually went to a home in the 300 block of East Locust Street, where they found Yost.

He “fit the description” — tattoos and all — of the so-called Matthew Young, police said.

The defendant later admitted to being at the victims’ home, documents said. Officers also noticed a black coat that was hanging over a chair at the house where he was found.

That coat was the only item of the $430 in stolen property that was recovered, police said.

While being arrested, documents said, Yost asked a woman at the East Locust Street home to get his shoes. She returned with a pair of blue Nike running shoes.

Yost was arraigned on misdemeanor counts of theft and receiving stolen property. His preliminary hearing is set for April 17.
