Rock drops a pair

SRU men join PSAC play tonight; BC3 teams ousted

Trailing by 11 points after one half of play, Slippery Rock University's women's basketball team came back to take a one-point lead in the third period, only to have the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown edge The Rock down the stretch in a 76-74 season-ending defeat.

UPJ's Victoria Moreland sank a jump-shot with 3.2 seconds left to lift the Mountain Cats to the win.

Sophomore forward Morgan Henderson sparked visiting SRU with 19 points and nine rebounds.

Brooke Hinderliter (17 points), Mallory Heinle (13) and C.C. Dixon (11) also scored in double digits for The Rock (9-19, 6-16).

Butler County Community College saw its season come to an end with a 62-57 loss to Prince George (Md.) Community College in the semifinals of the NJCAA Region 20 Tournament.

Julia Baxter paced the Pioneers (15-9) with 28 points and 18 rebounds.

Kaylynn Callihan added 14 points. Christina Davis had 12 boards and nine assists.

George Chase scored 14 points and Naquil Jones added 12, but it wasn't nearly enough to lead The Rock to victory as SRU suffered a 93-65 loss to Pitt-Johnstown in the regular season finale for both teams.

The Rock trailed 48-20 at halftime.

SRU (14-14, 10-12) will open play in the PSAC Tournament against Mercyhurst tonight in Erie.

BC3 closed the 2016-17 campaign with a 77-66 loss to Westmoreland County Community College in the region quarterfinals.

Garret McHenry scored 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for the Pioneers (10-19).

Brendan Record registered 13 points and Jake Anderson 10 rebounds.
