Geist sets world record

Knoch senior hits 68-4 to break 16-pound shot mark

HEMPFIELD TWP — When Jordan Geist let the 16-pound shot put go and watched it arch toward the landing area at Hempfield Thursday night, he had a good feeling.

When the distance was announced at 68-feet, 4 inches, Geist was in shock.

“It's 24 hours later and I still don't know what to think about it,” Geist said. “It's definitely made me rethink things.”

The throw was a high school world record with a 16-point shot, the weight used in collegiate and international competitions and shattered the national record of 63-11 held by Ryan Crouser.

And Geist, a Knoch senior who has already signed to throw at the University of Arizona, did it with some flare.

He competed while wearing a Taylor Swift T-shirt hanging from his broad shoulders.

Geist laughed when he explained his style choice.

“I've always been a big fan of Taylor Swift,” he said. “I like her music. I'm hoping now I can possibly get to meet her.”

So early in the season, Geist was surprised he threw so far with rust as a factor.

He didn't have to shake it off, it seems.

It was another record in a 2016 full of them for Geist.

But his first with a 16-pound shot put in his hand.

Geist's first throw came in at 62-3. His third throw broke Crouser's record at 64-5½ and then hit 64-6 before his final throw that would have been the top toss in the country with a 12-pound shot put.

The throw of 68-4 also would have been good enough for fifth at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

“I came into the meet hoping for 63 feet,” Geist said. “It's hard to tell in practice, because I throw into a wall, but I was at 63 and 64 and that's a pretty good day.”

While the conversion isn't exact, Geist figures his throw with the 16-pound shot would be between 77 and 78 feet with a 12-pound shot.

Geist said, while others find it more difficult to move from a 12-pound shot to a 16-pound shot, he is the opposite.

“It's easier for me to go from 12 to 16,” he said. “It slows me down and make me hit my marks. A lot of people like going down to the 12 because they can grip it and rip it.”

Geist already holds the Pennsylvania indoor record in the 12-pound shot at 72-9½.

His record outdoor mark in the event is 74-4½.

In his first indoor meet of the season last week at the Dickinson Holiday Invitations, Geist threw 71-4 with the 12-pound shot.

It's quite a start in the indoor season for Geist, who won the PIAA championship in both the shot and discus during the outdoor season. His outdoor throw in the shot of 74-3½ is a state record.

Geist won the New Balance National Indoor meet and the Pennsylvania Indoor title last winter in the shot.

Geist will compete again at Hempfield Jan. 4.

“I always seem to throw well there,” Geist said. “I'm looking forward to it.”
